Calculate Your Target Heart Rate

Please note:  This guide is for normal, healthy persons. Check with your doctor BEFORE starting any exercise program.

To find your target heart rate zone:

  • Subtract your age from 220. This gives you your maximum heart rate for a normal, healthy person.
  • Multiply that figure by 60% to 80% to find your target heart rate zone
  • Example for a 45 year old person: 220 minus 45 = 175 x 60% = 105
  • Remember, this calculation is only a general guide. Check with your doctor first.

When in your target heart rate zone, your breathing should be increased, but you should still be able to carry on a normal conversation with a person next to you.  A good workout program might be to exercise in your target heart rate zone, 3 to 5 times per week, for 15 to 30 minutes each time.
